Telopea speciosissima Sydney Waratah
2m x 1m
Fl Spring
Upright shrub with long stems rising from a lignotuber at ground level. Each stem is topped by a globular head of bright red florets surrounded by red bracts. Grow in semi-shade with a minimum of competition from other shrubs. Requires a well-drained site and a good cover of mulch keeping the ground moist at all times. Commercial growers build a mound for growing waratahs to ensure good drainage. Deep water in the summer time. Cut stems back almost to ground level after flowering. Fertilise with Blood and Bone in Spring and Autumn and with foliar sprays of Aquasol during the growing period. Buds form in Autumn and may require protection during winter to prevent the bracts burning with frost. Spray for scale with White Oil during the cool of the evening.
