Grows naturally on sandy loam in WA from Geraldton to Perth and to the Jarrah forests of the SW.
Perennial with thick rhizome and long strappy upright leaves. This species has tall upright branched flower stalks which stand out from the foliage. The bright red and green velvety flowers develop from the bottom up. Highly bird attractive. Foliage dies down in the winter and new shoots form in spring. Susceptible to Ink disease - water at ground level. Prefers a very well-drained sandy site. Does well in a tub. Specimen with that Wow factor. Divide clumps after 3 years.
